I am always amazed at the gall of some people. This isn't the first time that one of my rental listings has been hacked and placed on a third-party site in an effort to rip others off.
I have a townhome for lease in Plano, TX for $1350 a month. The owners just happened to go to the house yesterday and found a woman walking around the outside looking in the windows. She explained to them that she was looking to rent the house for $500 a month and a $400 deposit. Then she showed them this email correspondence:
Not only are they trying to swindle money from people, but they are using an excuse that they are missionaries! What is the scum beneath scum?!
If you are a potential renter and you see an ad on a website (this was Craigslist), do your homework! A quick Google search of the property address and the given number and email will tell you A LOT!
In this instance, a search of the address would reveal several websites that advertised my listing for $1350 and included my contact information, not some random person. I Googled the number that was in the email asking for text communication only and it revealed it was a land line. Fishy. And take a look at the verbiage and language. Who uses USD when describing money? People who are not from this country. Even fishier. I love that you can also do a Google search for an email address and this is what I found, the original Craigslist post.
Bottom line is, BEWARE OF WHAT YOU SEARCH FOR ON THE INTERNET! DO YOUR RESEARCH!! Spread the word!
